Why An Omaha Walk In Clinic Could Be A Better Option Than An Emergency Room

By Paul Wagner

When you aren't feeling well, you have to decide whether or not you are so sick you should call an ambulance, get in the car and drive to the emergency room, or wait until morning to make an appointment with your primary physician. Sometimes none of these options seem applicable, and when that is the case in Nebraska, you might consider going to an Omaha walk in clinic.

Emergency rooms and the staff that works in them are critical for those with life threatening injuries and illnesses. Everyone is trained to work quickly and make split second life and death decisions. If you opt to go to the hospital for a fever, aches, pains, or minor injuries you will be taking a professional away from the patients that are in dire circumstances. If you had gone to an urgent care facility you would have been treated by an experienced practitioner quickly and sent on your way.

Going to the emergency room is your most expensive option. Even routine exams and tests for a minor injury or ailment can cost more than a thousand dollars. If you call an ambulance, and the EMTs treat you, you'll face a bill of several hundred dollars. Clinics are much smaller facilities than hospitals, and they can operate on a fraction of the overhead.

Urgent care facilities can be a lot more convenient than hospitals. Many of them are located in pharmacies in neighborhoods throughout large and small towns. It is easier to find a parking space there, and the time you will wait to see someone is usually minimal. Not all facilities are open twenty-four hours a day, but most open early and close late.

You wouldn't go to a cardiologist to treat a cold, and you shouldn't go to an emergency room for a minor health issue. Walk in clinics are set up for these kinds of situations. It is more efficient to go to one of these than to wait for hours to see a specialist in the hospital. You will be in and out faster and with less paperwork.

Although most hospitals are much more efficient than they used to be, they still require patients to fill out forms and answer series of questions that are inputted into a computer system. You may find yourself being directed from window to window until you have completed the paperwork. Clinics are smaller, less complicated businesses that don't require a mountain of paperwork.

Another convenience you will find by opting for urgent care is that your prescriptions can be filled at the clinic or pharmacy where you were treated. You don't have to go someplace else to get your medication, which can be a real convenience if you are not feeling well. Of course you can choose to use your regular pharmacy, but at least you have the option.

Getting sick can be frightening, especially if it is unexpected. Your natural reaction may be to go to the hospital, but that might not be the best option. For minor ailments and injuries, a walk in clinic can be quick, affordable, and the best solution.
