By Marci Nielsen

Over the ages, man has felt the need to identify with the supernatural forces. With he many things that science cannot account for, man have had to deal with the fact that there is a greater power. This is where religion comes in. Human beings have formed distinct ways to worship god. There re many worship centres in every town or city where the dwellers flock to worship as they feel right. Here are a few facts about churches Homa-bay Kenya and their roles in society.

Just like many other parts of Homa-bay Kenya received missionaries who had come to spread the word. The catholic mission was there to make sure that the people of this place were enlightened. This is one of the dominant denomination in this area. The people gladly continue to follow in ways of the Roman church teachings and practices. The Catholic Church members in this community enjoy their Sunday mass every week in their local church.

At times, the holy mass is conducted by a parish priest. This is not always the case as there are times that one of few chosen parishioners are left in charge when the parish priest cannot make it to the service. This is mainly due to shortage of clergy with large areas to be served. Other than the parish priest, other people are not allowed to administer sacraments to the congregation. Their roles are not the same as those of priests as they are not ordained as priests.

The region has a number of Adventists. The Adventists were converted by the missionaries who also came to spread the word. Though they are fewer than Catholics, there are a number of the seventh day believers. The church could not have gained many followers as the Catholic Church was strongly rooted among the people.

The full gospel church is also popular here in this region. It is acclaimed as a protestant church. Drawn from the mainstream church, the church was set as a disagreement on the ways of Roman Catholic worship. This has been of great influence in this society.

The region has seen many more churches being established each rising day. The mainstream church which has been deeply rooted in this society has come through for a society in many ways. There have been initiatives that have helped the society.

The children home in this town was started by the full gospel back in the days. In the mid 1960s the home was aimed at giving a home to the kids that did not have parents. With the high numbers of HIV deaths in the region, such establishments have held in society together.

A church has a moral obligation to correct the society and even ensure that people lead lives in a righteous way. Most people here are affiliated to certain religious denomination, worship centres have been influential. For a long time now the role of the church has been to unite people in a common goal of worship. This is very important in every society.
