Joshua The Odyssey Weaves Intrigue

By Lela Perkins

Every now and then, the literary world is graced with a work that makes the people stop and question what they thought they knew. Joshua The Odyssey Of A Man is just such a creation. This piece of historical fiction is a skillfully written account based on the speculative life of one of history's most famous personalities.

Written by Dr. Theckedath Mathew, MD, this is becoming the most discussed work of the modern era. While based on a real person, the tale is written in such a way that it feels like reading an actual biography. The primary character is modeled after Jesus of Nazareth and offers a possible account of what events may have occurred during the years in which there is no mention of the prophet in the Bible.

Joshua, the main character, is a Jewish boy of thirteen years who lives in the land of Galilee and is based on Jesus Christ. Like the biblical prophet, he is different from the other children and has some unique qualities about him. The tale picks up after the Joshua is banished from the temple for contradicting the rabbi, and proceeds through the next eighteen years of his life.

Jesus Christ basically disappears from the Bible for the eighteen years between ages thirteen and thirty-one and people have come up with hundreds of speculative theories on just what may have happened during that time. There are numerous questions surrounding his travels, his companions and his activities. While there is not any definitive proof, using period writings and doing intense research, Dr. Mathew has constructed a highly plausible scenario.

Dr. Mathew studied the land and lifestyles of the period so thoroughly that he was able to paint a vivid picture through his words. The characters are so skillfully constructed that each one seems to virtually leap off the page and into life. His brilliant writing style is what makes it so difficult to remember that the book is actually a work of fiction.

From the very beginning the reader becomes invested in the story and stays intrigued right through to the last sentence. Joshua is portrayed as a man wise beyond his years who is among the first promoters of fair and equal treatment for women. In similar fashion as the biblical account, he saves a woman from a group of men wanting to stone her to death for sinning.

He travels to many lands such as Egypt, Athens, Babylon and Rome spreading his words of wisdom, healing and teaching. He makes his way on through Mathura, Taxila and Israel interacting in the lives of people of all classes and bringing attention to the plight of the poor and needy. All accounts are historically accurate to the time period in which they are based.

The tale of Joshua The Odyssey Of A Man is one book that is worth the time it takes to read it. It gives the reader something to think about and opens them up to a world of possibilities and adventures. Whether one is Christian or not, this is one tale of humanity and struggle that will keep one wanting to know what happens next until the very last moment.
