Help For Young Adults Available Through Nonprofit Sector

By Michelle Howe

As global economics continue to shift, many nonprofit groups are finding more opportunities to serve. This is reflected in reports that these groups are hiring more staff. Young adults in the seventeen to twenty-four year old age bracket are graduating from schools and looking for jobs. Sites that provide job searches for nonprofit organizations can be instrumental in giving help for young adults.

The years of later adolescence and young adulthood are generally tumultuous and exciting. Some graduates have direction; they have had a focus on their career from childhood. Some may only have a vague idea of what they want to do. They want to explore the possibilities. There are numerous nonprofit job search sites. Some sites have been in existence for fifteen to twenty years. They all include statements explaining their philosophy and goal. That could be important to a person when choosing a site.

Each nonprofit job site directory listing includes its name and contact information, office locations, how long the organization has existed, and its mission statement and purpose. The mission statement could be especially beneficial. That statement explains a great deal about the listing organization. The purpose of the organization can also provide valuable information.

Other information in the directory that could be helpful to a graduate includes the geographical region the nonprofit directory serves, how many jobs are available, any fees involved for registering or searching, and which social media links are available. There are some nonprofit directory organizations listed that have not established social media link pages yet. Another section of each listing is general usability. It provides a brief commentary and description of navigation around the listed organizational web sites. There is information about what languages are available on the site, and how job listings are displayed.

Numerous filters are available when searching the directories for a job listing. This is a great way to utilize valuable time. For example, a high school graduate interested in agriculture and looking for a salary of about thirty thousand dollars a year could go to a job directory and set up filters to locate a listing that would support those specific requirements. Alternatively, a college graduate that has been focusing on a writing career since childhood, recently obtaining a bachelors degree in creative writing, and wanting to travel to China, could filter for every item and see if there were any listings available. All searches can be tailored to meet the specifications of the graduate.

A resume is an important resource for graduates. Most if not all, job listings in the directories require a resume. Some of the directories have a resume creation option. Others have tips about creating a resume. There is also the option of creating a resume and uploading it to the job directory website. There is generally no fee for this service.

Other resources available from the job directories include career planning, skill assessments and training, and courses available via the Internet. If the graduate is unsure about what career he/she might be suited to, the directories offer career testing. The Frequently Asked Questions information can be helpful, as can seminars via the Internet and chat support.

Nonprofit job directories could assist in providing help for young adults in achieving the goal of finding or pursuing a career that is meaningful and rewarding. Nonprofit organizations play a crucial role in the global economy. Their existence serves the world.
