What NY Wedding Officiant Entails

By Rena Hudson

States have different ways in which weddings are conducted. In some states couples can get married without the need of a formal priest. In certain states their rules are strict and they dictate that only ordained priest in that state can perform the ceremonies there. The state of New York has its own guidelines. It is therefore advisable to do a research to find out who can act as a NY wedding officiant.

Under the New York Relations Law section 11, there are a group of persons who should preside over a marriage ceremony within the state. The persons so permitted are given their authority by the laid down rules of how marriage ceremonies should be conducted. If there is a wedding that was lead by an untrained person, that wedding would be held to be void.

Mayor of a village or city is one of the ordained persons to lead a ceremony in the town. A former mayor and the city clerk can perform the ceremony. One of the deputy city clerks of a city with more than a million inhabitants can also perform the ceremony.

Marriage officers who receive their appointments from the boards in towns or the village or from the town common council have the authority to perform the ceremonies in town. A justice from a certain village, town or county could also perform this ceremony as they are authorized by the rules. However, captains in ships are not allowed to conduct a marriage ceremony under any circumstances.

Clergy or minister member is allowed to preside over marriage ceremonies happening within the area. For this to happen, there is need for them to be officially ordained and authority bestowed upon them to conduct ceremonies. He would then proceed and lead the ceremonies as per the stated guidelines of the body governing the church and the state.

Minister or member of clergy who has not been authorized but has been chosen by a certain spiritual group to lead their spiritual affairs can also perform the ceremonies. Such a person is recognized by the law as an priest and hence given the authority to conduct marriage ceremonies. However, as they not authorized by the governing body of a church, they must be chosen by a certain known spiritual group in order to be able to conduct the ceremonies.

Marriage ceremonies taking place within the City require that the priest be registered with the City. However, it is not necessary that the priest be a New York State resident. The ministers must fill a marriage certificate and take it back to the city or town clerk who had issued the marriage license. This should be done within five days after the marriage has taken place.

Once one selects their best NY wedding officiant, several other things might be considered. The rate of fees to be charged, the kind of ceremony to be held, the donations to be expected and how the license would be sent for process of recording it. All legal issues concerning the wedding ceremony should be sorted early enough to ensure that the most important day goes well without drama.
