The Elderly Care New Jersey Residents Need Can Be Found

By Tamika Powell

Individuals who are faced with the challenge of finding help for elderly parents or another family member may feel a bit overwhelmed. This is because the elderly care New Jersey families need for their loved ones can be obtained from many different sources. These include home health services, visiting nurses, or long-term facilities.

The health history of the person in need of assistance plays a large role in deciding which kind of services are most appropriate. Home healthcare is a viable option for individuals who are not disabled or incapacitated. This alternative is often chosen by families who want their loved one to remain at home, but realize that he or she requires daily help.

In most cases, before a client can qualify for home healthcare assistance, an evaluation must be completed by a visiting nurse to determine the extent of assistance the person needs. In certain cases, a moderate amount of help with one's standard daily activities is all that is needed. However, skilled care may be necessary in some instances. The latter must be administered by a professional such as a registered nurse who performs his or her duties under a physician's direction.

A home safety evaluation is usually part of an assessment for in-home healthcare. The goal of this evaluation is to discover if sanitation issues exist or if the home is dangerous in any way for the elderly person. The professional who completes this assessment will also make recommendations concerning the level of assistance needed by the client and he or she will communicate these suggestions to concerned family members.

Even elderly men and women who are ill or disabled usually want to remain in their own dwelling. However, in some cases this proves impossible. When a person reaches a point at which he or she can no longer safely reside in his or her home, families will soon discover that multiple options are available regarding healthcare facilities. A group home setting is a popular option, as appropriate assistance is provided in such establishments for those who cannot live independently, but who are not suffering from incapacitating disabilities.

A personal care home is not a long-term nursing facility, and such establishments do not usually offer medical assistance or health evaluations. Instead, they assist residents with their activities of daily living. Such help may include assistance with eating, bathing, and transportation to and from medical appointments.

Some elderly men and women cannot function without the help of a licensed nursing staff. Once a person has reached this point, his or her family should consider a nursing home or other long-term facility. Such establishments employ registered nurses who can assist residents with medications and assess their health on a regular basis. Most long-term care facilities are also visited regularly by physicians who perform checkups for those who are disabled or suffer from health conditions.

It is important for all family members to discuss each option available before making a final decision about which course of action is best for their loved one. Deciding which type of facility is most suitable can be a challenging task, and in certain cases it may be wise for the person's family to speak to a social worker who can help them with the decision-making process. Ultimately, the elderly care New Jersey residents require can be located through one of the options outlined above.
