Obstacles Of Family Therapy Manhattan

By Sharon Kennedy

The goal of family therapy Manhattan is to help families overcome the issues that face them. Some of the problems families face tear them apart to an extent therapy is considered a way to help them come together. These issues can be dealing with grief, divorce, trauma in the family, mental and even financial issues. These issues can bring so much tension that the family is not able to remain united. This is when family therapy is recommended.

As you progress with the therapy, there are some challenges that can hinder its success. To start with the therapy should be agreed upon by the family as a way to address the family issue. The therapy can only help if the family agrees to work to unite the family. The family should also be willing to change on the suggestions provided by the therapist.

There are instances where the emotions of the issue in the unit may be too overwhelming. When the timing of the therapy is not appropriate, the success rate drops. Emotions may be too intense in a way that it hinders the sessions and slows down the healing process. Each member needs to be emotionally fit to attend the sessions and take part in a positive way for the sessions to be beneficial.

The emotions of the family members should be in control not to affect the success of the therapy sessions. Otherwise, it is not useful to carry out the therapy at this time. If not in control, it may be advisable for the family members to take up individual therapy first. This will help them deal with their emotions and get them in a position to deal with family therapy sessions.

The therapy sessions also need to be purposeful with a set target to be achieved. Failure of the therapist to set targets or a clear sense of direction during each session can lead to a waste of time. The family may end up arguing or fighting. Instead of working out through the issue that brought up the need for therapy, it may escalate to other issues.

Boundaries and ground rules also need to be set and followed. This gives a clear picture of how each one should behave and interact with each other during the session. The atmosphere becomes clear and gives room for the therapy to work. In the absence of the boundaries and rules, the sessions can turn out to be a waste of time and yield no results.

The ideas some people have about therapy also may be obstacles to the therapy. For example, those that think it is a tedious process with no end may be afraid to get into it. Others consider the sessions to be avenues for them to attack and embarrass each other. Such misconceptions hinder the progress of the therapy.

As you consider family therapy Manhattan you need to be open to the fact that therapists are different. Go for a passionate and experienced therapist who uses an approach that will fit well with your issue. One who will also be confident and courageous to handle the tension in your family.
