Serious cases such as criminal ones need good handling from investigative detectives and defense lawyers. Studying the case and finding leads are some steps in uncovering evidence against the suspect. Secondly, they do defendant interviews. Certain questions will be asked to the victim in order to find the angle of the crime against them. In effect, they can form a general motive idea on the suspect and the whole event. This is important in order to understand fully the case.

Thirdly, they inspect the crime scene. This will be revisited so they can analyze the happenings at that certain time. Here, they are to search for tools used, any objects left behind, and fingerprints of both parties. Fourthly, they investigate the personal background of their accused. They search for any criminal records they previously done. They will also interview people closest to him or her as well as those who interact daily with them in regards to their character and behavior.

The fifth component is doing witness interviews. They will talk to their witness as to what they remember at the time of this crime. In order to have documentation on this, they will write it down for their witness statements. Sixth, they do testifying and investigative reports. It contains their conclusion, findings, and analysis on this case. They are then required to submit a copy of this case file to the court, chief of police, and defense lawyers.
