Upon conclusion of dental school, one graduates with either a Doctor of Dental Medicine or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. In the US, the programs are accredited by the American Dental Association. The four years are divided into the first two years and last two years. One gains clinical practice in the last two years as they are allowed to treat and diagnose patients under direct supervision of an experienced dental instructor.

When one has satisfactorily finished their training most states demand that they obtain licensure before they are allowed to start their own practice. The requirements that one must meet differ from one state to another, but taking a National Board Dental Examination is a standard practice in almost all states of America. Besides this test there is also a practical examination administered by every licensing board of each state.

One has to consider specializing in specific areas when they are finally practicing on their own or have been absorbed by federal or state institutions. All it takes it 2 to 4 years of extra training in order to achieve this. Also, for the sake of staying current with recent industrial trends, one has to take regularly stand-alone continuing education programs.
