Adults Coping With Childhood Trauma NYC And The Way Forward

By Janet Hughes

There are people who have different ways of coping with trauma. A lot of people will supress these emotions. It seems easier, but it is obviously not the most healthy way in handling the condition. A child who has been abused will often be lost. They won't know which way to turn. Adults coping with childhood trauma NYC often have trouble coping with their daily lives.

They may try and block this out of their memory, but it is in their subconscious mind, so there are emotions which are brought on from time to time. They have particular characteristics which are common to all adults like this. They may turn to substance abuse. This can help them escape them from what they are going through.

They will have a sense of fear which can be difficult to escape from. Some people get flashbacks which can seem so real. There are certain things which trigger memories and lead to flashbacks. They usually relate to senses, such as smells and tastes. Sometimes, one will see something on television and this will remind them of what they have been through.

Memories can be triggered at different points. There are people who will begin to think of their own childhood and what they have been through after having a baby of their own. Some people get flashbacks because of a flavour or a smell. There are people who go to therapy for something unrelated, and this is when they have a number of triggers.

A child who has been treated this way will grow up with many bad memories. It is the words which they remember the most. They would have sunk in and rung true because when you are a child, you believe what your caregivers tell you. As a result, adults have a low self esteem. They may have addictions that develop as a result. They can develop bad relationships.

Therapists who specialize in this will work with various methods based on the patient, their situation and their personality. Sometimes, they will refer them to another therapist for a short while who specializes in a method which they could benefit from. An example of this is cognitive behaviour therapy. This can help with a low self esteem. They can also learn to work in groups.

Support is necessary during a time like this, no matter what stage the individual is at and what age they are. This can come from the rest of the family. It is important that they engage with the counselor during some of these sessions. They need to know more about what the individual has been through and to understand more about the condition.

The therapist will realize that it takes more time to connect with the patient. They have been through a lot in their life and they will need to be more patient. However, they have the skills for this. Sometimes, they will make use of creative or art therapy which can bring a person out of their shell. Often, this give the individual a sense of freedom as they are busy with their task. They are also assigned homework on occasions which keeps them motivated and encourages them during this time.
