Tips For Jewish Interfaith Marriage

By Sandra West

Time just seems to speed up when there is much to prepare and the day finally dawns on one before one looks around. A Jewish Interfaith Marriage is common today and so there are many who have travelled this route and will be able to make suggestions on how to go about arranging a ceremony of this type. It is best to consult with a Rabbi as to the nature of how the proceedings will be carried out just to give one an idea as to how a marriage of this type differs from one that one is accustomed to.

There are areas that one should accustom oneself to such as learning a bit about the dietary laws included in this religion. For many it is a life long practice so it is important that these laws are kept and met especially seeing as there will be Jews on the wedding list that do practice and adhere to these laws. It is not a difficult subject and there are certain basic guidelines that must be met.

Food for one can seem like a problem as there are many rules to follow when practicing this faith. It may not be important for the Jewish partner but for some guests that will be invited, these rules will have to be applied. Kosher laws or dietary laws are extensive and it is no wonder that stress can creep in when regarding the many laws that govern this part of the Bible.

A period of six hours must pass before one can eat milk after meat so with this in mind it is best to keep to choosing one dish only, either meat or milk. One can however eat milk with fish so many opt for this and include traditional desserts such as cheese cake and coffee to finish off the meal. Seafood is not allowed at all and this includes all shellfish such prawns, lobster, crab, shrimps and more.

Animals falling into this category include cattle, sheep and goats. It may be a nice touch to have an Israeli meal and serve a traditional dish such as shawarma in pita with salads. It all depends on budget and one can explore the many options that a kosher caterer will have to offer.

It is best to discuss these options with a caterer who will allude to the laws that must be upheld. An interfaith Rabbi is a fountain on knowledge and will have a list of caterers for one's choosing. The dietary laws are not that complicated and many do find that they will want to incorporate them into their daily lives.

Another dish that is allowed is Sushi. This is very popular amongst Jews and will definitely get a stamp of approval by all guests attending. It is a must do.

Judaism is a beautiful religion that practices love for all and tolerance of others. It is about elevating the mundane to a higher spiritual level and this is apparent because of the many blessings said before and after eating food. The nuptial day is a special one and will be remembered always.
