Just because essential oils come straight from nature doesn't mean they can be used without caution. Never take it orally. It's is one of those essential oils that are not meant to be ingested. Despite of its name, it doesn't really come from the same tree that produces green, black and other kinds of teas. Experts say that it is something that's highly toxic to human beings. Problems that could strike upon its ingestion include unsteadiness, confusion, rash formation and also coma. Animal experts say that it is also lethal to pets when ingested.

Make sure that you have it diluted first. Due to its sheer potency, diluting it with your preferred carrier oil has to be done prior to application. Different dilutions are recommended for different needs. Generally speaking, you should place 1 to 2 drops of it to 1 teaspoon of your chosen carrier oil, regardless if its almond oil, coconut oil or olive oil.

Perform a skin patch test beforehand. A day prior to employing it, check if you will have any unfavorable reaction to it. A small amount of diluted tea tree oil should be placed at the back of your ear or on the inside of your elbow. Wait for 24 hours to pass. If there's redness or itchiness or some kind of pimples appear, it means you are allergic to it. Immediately wash the area with soap and water. Needless to say, you should never apply it anywhere on your body.

Check that it's not expired. Prior to diluting and applying, see to it that the product is not yet expired. Using something that's already expired can leave you with severe skin reactions. When stored properly, it can last for up to 2 long years. Similarly, you should skip using it if it's already oxidized, which means that it has been exposed to the elements for quite some time.

Avoid applying it on the skin of young boys. Experts agree that it's something not suitable for teenage boys. That's because it is known to cause a disruption in the normal balance of hormones. One of the problems that may happen is the young boy may end up developing breasts, which is medically known as gynecomastia.

Inform your doctor about your plan on using it. Generally speaking, it's something safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Because not everyone is the same, it is definitely a good idea to ask your doctor if it's okay for you to use it topically. Do the same if you have a known medical condition to ensure that no complication will strike.

It cannot be denied that tea tree oil is one of the most powerful and beneficial essential oils around. However, proper usage of it is crucial. By always remembering the tips stated above, unnecessary problems can be avoided.
