Simple Pastry Recipes In New England

By Linda Snyder

Every part of the US has its own characteristic desserts. Some are widely popular and prepared elsewhere as well, and most people cannot tell where these recipes came from any more. Among various old pastry recipes in New England, some came from Europe, some are changed over time, adapted or enriched, and some are still used in their original form. In any case, here are two really simple and tasty desserts for you.

One of those simple and generously tasty recipes is known as the Boston Cream Pie. Easy to make, not expensive and containing simple ingredients, this little dessert is really popular. For making it, you need 2 separated eggs, one and a half cup sugar, 2 1/4 cup sifted cake flour, three tbs of baking powder, a touch of salt, one third cup sunflower oil, one cup of milk and vanilla sugar.

Make snow of two egg whites and one half cup of sugar. Dry ingredients should be sifted together first, and then you should add egg yolks, milk, vanilla and oil and make a mixture. Egg white snow should be gently mixed in. Grease and flour the pan, pour in the mixture and bake on 350F for maybe 20 minutes. This time depends on the size of your pan. Cool for ten minutes or so and remove from the mold.

For making the filling, take 1/3 cup of sugar, one whole egg, 1/4 teaspoon of salt and some vanilla extract or vanilla sugar, three tablespoon flour and one and 1/4 cup milk. Mix all these ingredients together and cook them, stirring all the time, over medium heat. When mixture thickens, remove it from the heat and combine with one table spoon butter. Let it cool covered. Fill the sliced cake and pour cooked chocolate glaze over.

For tasty Chocolate glaze you will need 1 1/2 ounce unsweetened chocolate, 2 tbsp. Butter, 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1 tsp. Vanilla and 3 tbsp. Of water. Combine water and sugar and let it melt over low heat, stirring constantly. Melt in chocolate, and add vanilla. At last, add butter and remove from heat. It should be of pouring consistency. Pour quickly over cake and spread evenly over top and sides.

Maple Apple Crisp is really easy to make and everybody can do it, even if they have no experience in making desserts. Peel and slice four large apples and combine them with four tablespoon lemon juice, one tbs.ground cinnamon and maybe half a cup of good maple syrup. Mix it all together well and set aside for a while.

The topping is also so easy to prepare. Combine one cup of Quaker rolled oats, 1/3 cup flour, 1/2 cup almonds, sliced, two tbs.vegetable oil, two tbs. Good maple syrup and one teaspoon of good quality almond extract. Simply combine these ingredients and let them rest for a while.

You should preheat your oven first. Put prepared apple mixture in it. Cover everything and bake maybe 40 minutes. The apples should be soft by then. Then, cover them with prepared almond mixture and return everything in the oven, for another 30 minutes or so, or until the topping becomes crispy. This easy dessert combines perfectly with your favorite ice cream, as well as with vanilla ice cream.
