Principles Applied For Addiction Recovery

By Peter Olson

It is not easy to simply stop using drugs or alcohol overnight. This is a process which takes a lot of courage. Some people are able to stop cold turkey, but these are few and far between. Many people have to go to a rehab center or enroll in a program specializing in addiction recovery. You will find that it can be difficult, but you will also discover how rewarding it can be.

In the initial stages, it will be extremely tough with a lot of negative emotions that will be entering your brain. This is why you need that support structure. Of course, it will depend from one person to the next and the situation. Some people may have lost everything in their life and find themselves living on cocaine and alcohol. In a case like this, you will need all the help that you can get.

You also have to decide on the program and the approach. Obviously if you are not able to function in life, you will be best off in a rehab. If this is not something that you can afford, you may be able to be sponsored. There are also people who are completely functional and are able to go for one on one counseling. Community programs can also suit your budget.

Community programs have become more popular because of the success rate. They are very effective because of the format. The groups are handled by a professional psychologist and this is managed well. It is a way in which one is able to reach out to others. You may also feel more comfortable connecting with others who have experienced something similar in life.

However, some people may not be comfortable talking to a group of strangers. In a case like this, it can be a good idea to contact a therapist who deals with addictions and people who have problems with alcohol. There are many people who specialize in this. You may find that you have a problem with trauma and this is the issue that you have to deal with first and foremost.

Family therapy may also be a requirement, especially when kids are involved because they would have been severely affected in some cases. Most of the time addicts don't realize this and simply focus on themselves. It so happens that children have these memories that they have to deal with much later on in life, along with a lot of other issues as a result of their parent's drinking and drug problems.

Group therapy is helpful because you will start to connect with others who are going through the same ordeal in life. In many cases, you will establish valuable friendships. It is a type of informal support which can be very useful. You will feel less isolated as you start to connect with other group members and you begin to share your stories.

They also need to think of getting into a regular exercise program, along with a healthy diet. A diet should consist of including vitamins and minerals in the all of the five food groups. They need to get enough sleep, and this will come with time. Any medication that they take should preferably be natural. Caffeine and nicotine should also be avoided.
