The first inhabitants on the Balkan peninsula were the ancient people known as the Illyrians. The Slavic people followed in the 6th and 7th centuries. What is now Montenegro was the Serbian principality of Zeta in the 14th century.

Montenegrin independence was perceived in 1878, and that year Montenegro received the red-blue-white tricolor of Serbia for its own state banner. Its Slavic hues were propelled by the Russian banner. At the point when Montenegro obtained a naval force, images of Prince Nicholas showed up on the outline.

In 2006 a popular referendum in Montenegro favored its secession from the federation, and independence was proclaimed on June 3; the flag of 2004 became Montenegro’s national flag on that day.
