By Brenda Nelson

The term Ob Gyn is a short form of the terms obstetrician and gynecologist. Sometimes the terms is written as Ob/Gyn. An Ob/Gyn is a medical physician whose specialty is in the female reproductive health and pregnancy. These are the doctors that ensure that the reproductive systems of women are in good health. They do this by diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases that affect the systems even during pregnancy. When in need of the services of an Ob Gyn Belize is a good location to visit.

The process of becoming an obgyn is a complicated one. Academic requirements are not just lengthy, but many too. To sum it up, one must complete four years of undergraduate degree, four years of medical degree, and four years of residency. Undergraduate coursework should emphasize scientific courses like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Admission into medical school usually bases on how one performed in their bachelor degree. Having good grades in undergraduate degree increase chances of admission.

One must make an application into the medical school of their preference in order to gain admission. Admission involves an extensive selection process based on various criteria. After admission, one spends the first two years of studies covering general subjects before they can start to specialize at the third year. General courses covered in the first two years include pharmacology, genetics, microbiology, human anatomy, and pathology among others.

The last two years involve a lot of hands-on practice in hospitals and other medical settings under the supervision of qualified physicians. Students also rotate among various disciplines such as gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics. After successfully completing medical school, one moves into residency where they gain more extensive training into labor and pregnancy management, female reproductive system, and health issues that are only unique to women.

Licensing is another major requirement to work in this field. Each state in the United States requires obgyns to be licensed. There are two bodies in the United States responsible for licensing workers in this field. These bodies are American Osteopathic Association, usually abbreviated as AOA and American Board of Medical Specialists, abbreviated as ABMS. Which body one gets licensed by depends on whether they graduated from an osteopathic or an allopathic school.

The work responsibilities of an obgyn is to work with women to diagnose, treat, and prevent medical conditions and disorders that are unique to women. Such conditions include menopause, cervical cancer, and breast cancer. They also work with women who are pregnant until they deliver and continue to offer care into postpartum.

Obgyns also perform annual examinations, gather and document medical histories from patients, and offer counseling. It is important to have strong communication skills because the job involves talking to patients in order to gather information. Good interpersonal skills and empathy are also key to being successful in this profession.

The demand for obgyns is expected to remain steady up to 2022. That means that more jobs will be available in this field over the years. According to statistics, an obgyn earned a median salary of 256, 635 US Dollars in 2014.
