Some Benefits Of Lap Band Surgery Houston Obese Residents May Get

By Kimberly Miller

Surgery is now widely accepted as an effective method of losing weight. There are several types of bariatric operations that are performed all over the world. Lap band surgery is among those that provide the most satisfactory results. Generally, people who sign up for these procedures are those that have attempted using other techniques (such as lifestyle modification) but have been unsuccessful. There are some important things on Lap band surgery Houston obese patients need to know.

Bariatric surgical procedures are also known as restrictive operations mainly because of the way they work. They reduce the size of the stomach hence limit or restrict the amount of food that an individual can eat at a go. Faster filling of the stomach usually induces a state of early satiety meaning that the desire for food will also suppressed. The little amount of food eaten is mainly used for energy provision; very little goes to storage.

The doctor will have to take a medical history and examine you before they schedule you for the operation. This is focused on assessing your surgical risk. Your medical history will be taken and the doctor will also conduct a physical examination on you. Candidates that benefit the most are those whose body mass index is above 40. A lower value may be considered if one already has conditions caused by excessive weight such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

During the operation, a circular silicon band is placed onto the upper portion of the stomach (also known as the fundus). The device causes compression and this effectively reduces the size of the stomach. The effective capacity is about an ounce. A special instrument known as a laparoscope is used in putting the device in position. It is inserted into the abdominal cavity through three small ports of entry.

Banding may also be done using the open technique but many patients appear to prefer the laparoscopic option. Among the factors contributing to this is the use of very small incisions in the laparoscopic option. Due to the small incisions, the risk of complications such as bleeding, injury to other organs and infections is reduced. Patients with these scars enjoy a quicker recovery and can return to their normal routines in 48 hours.

The main advantage that lap banding has over other types of bariatric surgeries is the fact that it is not a permanent procedure. Adjustments can easily be made when complications set in or the band can be removed from the stomach altogether. The presence of a plastic tubing connected to the band makes this possible. Filling the tube with saline increases the squeeze and reduces the stomach size further and withdrawing the saline increases the size.

In general, this procedure, is considered safe. This does not mean that there are not potential complications. During the operation, excessive bleeding and injury to other structures may occur. Fortunately, the use of laparoscopy has markedly reduced this risk. Other complications that may be encountered are nausea and vomiting and these mainly result due to excessive pressure by the silicone band. Reducing this pressure reduces symptom severity.

In most centers, this surgery is performed as a day case. What this means is that you will be released from the hospital on the same day. The diet on the first two to three weeks should be light. Weight loss is evident within weeks of undergoing the surgery. It has been shown that between 40% and 50% of weight can be lost within 6 months and one year.
