Can You Still Work At Home In Your Pajamas In Medical Billing?

By Daniel Oatwoods

A question on a lot of medical biller's minds are if they should work for themselves or a professional billing company. This question is a good one because the job market is open to both. If you choose to work for yourself, you may find it hard to find clients. Many medical doctors and healthcare providers today prefer working with a company. This doesn't mean that your chances of landing a client is obsolete. You can make yourself stand out by following some simple suggestions. For starters, doctors today are looking for billers that specialize in ICD-10 coding and have certification in it. This is a hard skill to find now days. If you choose to work for a company that specializes in this, you will also be required to know this well.

Medical coding is not what it used to be. Today's coders have to be smart, knowledgeable about money and specific about what they want exactly. Medical billing often requires people knowing more about the industry and how billing works. Many medical billing companies prefer to hire people with years of experience. This is mainly because ICD-10 is not easy to learn. Without experience, education and knowledge, your chances of succeeding are slim.

Well established medical billing companies have been studying ICD-10 for over a year now. They are way ahead in understanding how to bill correctly. This is why a lot of medical doctors are turning to outsourced companies. This is happening for various reasons. As each day passes, people are reminded that they have opportunities for growth. It is important to decide on whether or not you want to work from home or in an office. If you want job security, it is always best to work for another company. In this way, you can always have a job even during your off peak times. If you prefer to have a stay at home business, then you may not have a check coming in if you should lose your client.

In my personal opinion, having a stay at home job is good if you have another source of income. If one business is doing bad, you have another business to back it up. It's important to understand how this all works. In order to have a job with a reputable company, you should have a master's degree in medical billing. I say this because there are many people wanting to become a medical biller.

If you work from home, then its best to get dressed every day. You don't want your client to think that you are lazy and doing their billing poorly. You should feel happy to get up in the morning and get to work. Get dressed and don't look sloppy. You never know when a potential client can come walking through your door. It takes a lot of time and effort to get a client to come to you. It is important to make this happen for yourself. In time, you will come to realize that coding takes time and effort. As each day passes, you will come to realize that working in the industry is extremely lucrative. Depending on how good you are will determine your pay. There are some billers earning a six figure income and others earning only $30,000 per year. It takes a person of a strong mind to get a business to a higher level. Everything takes time and a lot of patience.
