They can certainly provide you with a list of recognized charities where you are. The charities bureau in your state can help as well.

Ask questions. In fact, as a potential donor, you're entitled to raise inquiries about these groups and what they represent. You wan every single penny you're giving to them to be properly accounted for. If they cannot provide you with such pertinent information, then it may be a better idea for you to find a different organization to support.
