Discover The Sedation Dentistry Maui Offers

By Alta Alexander

A lot of people get tense and feel uneasy about going to see the dentist. Their level of anxiety will go up even more if they need to be scheduled for something other than a cleaning and films. Sedation Dentistry Maui and Wailuku, HI offers folks a solution that helps them stay calm and relaxed during a procedure. There are three ways that sedatives are administered prior to the appointment and during the scheduled work.

There are a few different delivery methods that are used to sedate a patient. The delivery systems include intravenous, inhalation, and oral. Administering a sedative helps the patient to be relaxed and clam throughout the entire procedure so the doctor is not interrupted. Dentistry that uses sedatives is commonly referred to as sleep dentistry.

This method of sedation is an ideal alternative for folks who become very anxious about having any type of dental work. In addition, anyone who needs to have extensive work, is disabled, or has special needs, can benefit from this type of anesthesia. There are also pediatric dentists that use this method of sedating children who cannot sit still through long procedures.

There are four different ways that a dentist administers the sedative. Each depends on the procedure that will be performed by the practitioner. The kind of sedation and how it is administered may also depend on the need and patient preference. Before starting any treatment that will use a sedative, the doctor will go over the types and possible risks with the patient.

Oral sedation is administered in pill form. The patient will be instructed to take the medication before arriving to the scheduled procedure. Usually, the patient is told to take the medication an hour before the appointment. The patient will arrive for their procedure in a very relaxed but conscious condition. General anesthesia, on the other hand, will put the patient to sleep but is administered in rare situations only.

When the dentist uses the gas sedative, he or she is using nitrous oxide. The gas is another option that is often called laughing gas. The gas will put a person into a very relaxed state. The nitrous oxide has no color or smell, and does not irritate the patients. The gas works rather fast and the depth of sedation can change if needed by raising or lowering the amount of gas administered.

Another type of sedative a dentist will use is delivered by IV directly into the bloodstream. This mode of delivery results in a very quick relaxed condition. The medication that is used through the IV can bring about a partial or complete loss of memory from the time it takes effect to when it wears off. This type of sedative includes sleeping, pain, and anti anxiety medicine.

Oral and IV sedatives have been used by dentists for many years. Not very many dentists has the right equipment or the training to administer the medication. Because of the improvements of tools used to monitor health and education advancements, it is becoming more common. Also, improvements in dentistry technology allows the dentist to confidently provide safety and comfort for their patients.
