It May Require Talking With Several Therapists To Find The Right One

By Joanna Walsh

The right therapist for another patient may not be the right one for you. There are so many factors to take into consideration. Usually it is apparent if a therapist is someone you can feel comfortable working with during the first session. For the individual looking for a therapist beverly ma has listings of excellent practitioners.

Each counselor has a certain type of personality. It should be easy to discuss anything, general or intimate, with this person. Such things may be the main presenting problem or will enter into the conversation at some point.

It is appropriate to ask about the education and experience of a prospective therapist. Discuss what type of therapy is to be used. Also ask about your goals and an estimation of how long it will take to reach them. Any qualified therapists in Topsfield, MA will be able to provide that information.

Going over childhood events to facilitate understanding may be successful. However, not many people want to undergo psychoanalysis in these modern times. It is considered too time-consuming.

Most clients are interested in resolving their issues in a faster way. In Cognitive Behavioral therapy, the undesirable behavior or fear is approached in a direct fashion. It is concerned with identifying the behavior and immediately undertaking ways to correct the problem.

All conversation between the patient and the counselor is confidential. That means that it cannot be discussed with a third party except under emergency circumstances. A professional distance must be maintained and it is the responsibility of the counselor to see that it does. There should be no physical contact of an intimate nature.

Specific goals are determined and set into motion immediately in CBT. An approximation of the number of sessions required will be calculated. At the end of each session, the therapist assigns homework to the client.

Another type of therapy, one example being psychotherapy, the question of why the person has social anxiety is explored endlessly. It is presumed that knowing why is going to help resolve the problem. In CBT a client and the therapist might engage in some imaginary discourse to start.

Someone afraid of the dark may be asked to first keep night lights on as he imagines being in the dark by closing his eyes. He may gradually think about what might be hidden in the dark. Then he will gradually use dimmer and dimmer night lights.

In traditional talk therapy, he would be exploring what may have scared him the first time. He may be asked to think of childhood fears from the adult perspective. As the person in psychotherapy is talking about being in the dark, the CBT patient may be taking nightly walks with a trusted friend to overcome the fear.

Each type of therapy is more appropriate for some and inappropriate for others. If the finish line for reaching the goals that are set is crossed, it is considered a success regardless of what path is taken to get there. CBT may not work for everyone and the same can be said about psychotherapy.
