How You Can Learn About Available Thyroid Disorder Care In Las Vegas

By Kurt Saniel

The thyroid gland is a large endocrine gland which has important functions in the human body. It makes proteins, determines how fast the body uses energy and controls sensitivity to other hormones within the body. When it is dysfunctional a Las Vegas Thyroid Doctor will be able to help.

Many things may cause dysfunction in the thyroid. For example, congenital anomalies, thyroid cancer or nodules that are not cancerous, thyroiditis and hyper or hypothyroidism. There are others in addition to these.

Endocrinology is the field of medicine that deals with these conditions. But, a primary care physician is perfectly capable of providing care for many of these anomalies. Many of the endocrinologists focus their practices on reproductive matters and diabetes.

One abnormal condition is hyperthyroidism, which is an overactive thyroid gland. It can speed up metabolism. The negative effects are sudden loss of weight, heartbeat irregularity and nervous irritability.

Other symptoms include excessive sweating, changes in menstrual cycles, increased bowel movements and brittle hair. Hyperthyroidism is often difficult to assess. In some people there are no symptoms. Beta blockers in prescription medications can mask any symptoms of thyroid diseases.

Thyroid cancer definitely creates a need for the services of an endocrinologist. There are a relatively small number of people stricken by this cancer. This means that not all doctors have seen many cases of it. When it does occur, the person should find one with as much experience as possible.

Graves disease and thyroid nodules have that same need. Someone who will need surgery for any such disorder must locate a surgeon with as much experience as possible. The pregnant woman or child who has any thyroid condition should be cared for by the doctor experienced in this field of medicine.

Many thyroid conditions are cared for competently by your primary physician. For some reason the number of doctors focusing on endocrinology conditions is small. This may be due to the low number of people needing that type of care.
