How To Stop Drinking Alcohol

By Dave A

How to Give up Drinking Alcohol

Most individuals who abuse alcohol understand the reasons why they should quit drinking, but the how continues to puzzle even this most diligent person among us. Maybe you have made a big legal mess or you've lost one more job. Maybe your spouse has left you or your family is tired of your behavior. Whatever your reason is, it is time to take a good look at yourself and finally be determined to stop drinking liquor.

If you even suspect you have a problem with alcohol, you probably do. Its just a matter of doing something about it?which is actually the tough part. Most drinkers know in the back of their mind that they have a problem.

It would certainly be much easier if alcoholics could just buy Magic Pills to cure themselves. Or maybe a hypnotist to 'reprogram' your need for alcohol. Wouldn't a time machine be nice, go back in time before you had a problem and refrain from that first drink?

The fact of the matter is there is no fast and simple way. To quit drinking liquor, you have to go through a process to learn how to live without alcohol. For some, it's going to be painful; alcohol cravings can be long. Therefore being prepared with coping tools and methods is essential for long term success. If you are an alcoholic who has been drinking heavily for a long period of time, you need to seek your doctor's advice before quitting in order to help you through withdrawal and detox. The pain and discomfort others experience is minimal. A lot of alcoholics have tried to stop once or twice in their lives. But the physical cravings can last for years. In order to succeed, you have to get used to living a life with no alcohol. Approx. 1/1000 people struggling with liquor stay sober beyond 2 years. The odds are dismal but there is a way to be that 1.

Yes, most individuals will fail if they do not stop drinking in a considered, systematic way.

First, you should convince yourself that you should give up drinking.

It could help if you write down all the reasons you could think of to stop drinking alcohol. Don't leave anything out, tell the whole story. This includes those humiliating times and the people whom you have hurt physically as well as emotionally. Keep it and make sure to read it when you feel like giving up the objective of quitting drinking alcohol.

It could also help if you think about the money you spend each time you drink liquor - buying it, going to clubs, the legal fees and salary loss. Check your credit card statements and your budget; don't just invent numbers. Try to figure out how much alcohol is costing you not only mentally, physically, relationally but financially.
