Methods Used By Doctors That Diagnose ADHD

By Claudine Hodges

The acronym ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyper-intensity Disorder. Doctors that diagnose ADHD are supposed to be professional s who know everything about this disorder so that they can give their patients the right information and medication. This disorder affects different kinds of people. It can affect children, teenagers and also adults. No specific test can be mentioned as that of ADHD but there are various methods that doctors assess a patient to confirm if they have this disorder.

When the patient being examined is a child, there are various things that must be looked at to critically analyze their behavior. The specialists are required to check out how they behave in all environments including school and home. This information can be acquired by interviewing their teachers and parents about their behavior.

In order to acquire the right type of information from the parents, the professionals are required to use questions that will talk about the following issues. They must be able to know if there are any issues that the parents ever noticed on the child. They must also find out more about their medical history and growth. If they have ever had any mental complications in the preceding years, this should be stated in the assessment.

There are specific ADHD symptoms which usually show very early in the life of the patient hence their parents will be asked if they have noticed any of these symptoms while interacting with their child. They may be asked about their relationship with their child to verify if they have had any kind of parenting problems in the past. All the things mentioned will be scaled to see how severe the problem is.

It is also important to get information from the school because this will help to determine just how severe the problem is for the child. Here, the teachers will be asked various questions which will help determine the kind of behavior the child shows while they are in school. Their behavior will be looked at in form of their discipline and also their response to punishment.

Apart from the home and school behavior, there are also some other things specialists usually look at. When the child is older, maybe a teenager, the specialists will need to be in session with them personally because they probably know things about themselves that no other person does. This way they can be able to find out if there are other things causing them to have ADHD symptoms.

The personal interview with the affected is also very important because it allows the specialist to assess their mental state. After this they will be able to know the right kind of medication to issue and determine if the victim of this disorder needs any other kind of help like for instance seeing a psychologist or an expert therapist.

Psychometric examinations can also be carried out on the client to assess their mental abilities. These comprise tests of their intelligence, reading and writing skills. These examinations also have a method of gauging the way the clients respond to attention issues.
