All About Emotional Abuse By A Psychotherapist

By Lucia Weeks

Psychotherapists are there for the sole purpose of helping those who have suffered from emotional trauma by offering treatment option like psychotherapy and others. Now there is a very big problem in the world of psychology because there are actually a lot of psychotherapists who would abuse that power and are just in the job for the money. There are actually so many cases of emotional abuse by a psychotherapist wherein the therapist may not even know.

Now one of the most common ways for patients to be emotionally abused by their therapists is for their therapists to act unprofessional. Now according to a certain code of ethics that therapists would follow, there is a strict rule about professionalism. In no circumstances should a therapist exhibit behavior that is unprofessional.

Now there is a very common problem among therapists that they would get extremely close to their patients. Sometimes this would actually lead to the point wherein they would talk too comfortably to their patients without realizing that the line has been crossed. What many therapists do not know is that instead of making the condition of the patients better, it would get worse.

Now the problem with being too close to the patient is that the therapist might actually have the tendency to open up things that are not supposed to be opened up. Of course those who are not that stable might just crack once there is a trigger that may enter their brain. So if a therapist is too close to his patient, he might accidentally say something inappropriate or say something that may pull a trigger.

Another way to emotionally abuse patients would be to be too tactless toward them. Now there is a fine line between being tactless and being professional. As a therapist, one should never say things that may sound cold toward a patient because it will just make the patient numb and not want to open up to the therapist.

Now therapists are supposed to be empathetic and are supposed to be able to empathize with what the patient is suffering from. From there, he should then create a diagnosis from the concepts that he learned while studying. From there, he will be able to provide treatment to his patient.

Now there are a lot of bad effects that could stem out from this kind of practice. Firstly, this would really badly affect those who are suffering from a traumatic disorder because it would make the patient shut himself off from the world. Of course depression would be one of the bad effects of this.

So as one can see, it is very important that a therapist would always take note of his behavior with patients. Now do take note that being a therapist is not just about the money. It is about helping people with their emotional problems so that they can get better. Patients are putting their mental health in the hands of the therapist and it is the job of the therapist to handle that trust with care and give the proper treatment.
