By Eric Holm

The term 'Hygiene' suggests set of practices associated with preservation of health and living a healthy life. Hygiene correlates with personal and professional care practices followed at every aspects of healthy living. Hygiene could be of many types such as medicinal hygiene, body hygiene, dental hygiene, domestic hygiene, occupational hygiene and sanitary hygiene. Hygiene practices widely vary based on cultural variations. Although hygiene at every level is necessary for healthy living, sanitary hygiene is something that is promoting health by avoiding human contact with the hazards of waste. The term 'sanitary' is derived from the word 'Sanitation'. The term sanitation is applied to a particular concept, aspect, strategy or location for basic sanitation, on-site sanitation, food sanitation, environmental sanitation and ecological sanitation.

Maintaining normal routines is very difficult for most people during a crisis. Sanitary supplies may be scarce and personal habits fall by the wayside as bigger issues are addressed. Emergency sanitation supplies including clean water are necessary for survival. Staying clean is the most effective way to prevent the spread of disease, a common problem caused by unsanitary conditions. Keeping the body clean and free of germs is necessary for good health. During an emergency, it is more important than ever to pay proper attention to cleaning the teeth, skin, hands, feet and hair.

People are urged to prepare a simple emergency hygiene list that includes the everyday items used to stay clean and fresh. Several products on the market are specifically designed to address things like bad breath, ear wax, pin worms, dandruff, head lice and the odor caused by perspiration. Various supplies should be packed into a disaster kit that can be easily accessed during any type of crisis. Many people will purchase an emergency toilet for use when water is unavailable for a long period of time. Any items used on a daily basis to wash hair, bathe the body, brush the teeth and launder clothing should be packed into a handy kit.

Learning about effective hygiene tips will prepare you for the worst and increase your chances of staying healthy. Wash the body thoroughly with antibacterial soap at least twice every day to get rid of germs that cause disease and eliminate body odor. Deodorants formulated with zinc or aluminum will fight odors most effectively, so look for these active ingredients when choosing a product. Select a deodorizing spray that is designed to kill various forms of bacteria. Clothing should be washed frequently to rid them of dirt and germs. Several products are designed specifically to combat bad smells but it is best to do what you can to avoid odors to begin with. Spicy food, for example, tends to give off an odor that will linger for quite some time. Avoid these foods when you know you will be stuck in a particular location for an extended period of time.

Emergency preparedness should always include ways to make the area sanitary. It is necessary to maintain a good diet when you are under stress. Mental health becomes an issue under difficult circumstances and maintaining a clean environment will help reduce some of that stress. Everyone should pack a kit with personal hygiene products and keep it in a convenient location. If a disaster strikes, you will be ready to deal with whatever crisis arises and ensure a good outcome for you and your family.
