To Remain Safe Child Abduction Awareness Must Be Taught To Youngsters

By Essie Osborn

The modern world offers many wonderful things and also some frightening dangers. There may be toxic material in the water or food. A young child can be safe at home with the parents. But, when he or she starts school, the parent cannot provide that degree of safety. There is child abduction awareness that is necessary due to the dangers present in society.

It is the goal of many agencies, law enforcement forces and school teachers, to keep children of all ages safe from sexual predators. There are both private and public agencies involved. Some parents who suffered the loss of a child start their own campaign to keep other children safe.

Publicizing the dangers present in modern life does provide some help. Announcements are made on television. Amber alerts are put out when someone is kidnapped. It is a difficult thing to impress children about the danger that can come from strangers. It is even more difficult to explain that a predator may be a relative or friend.

There was a time when parents felt no need to teach children about predators. How hard it is to explain that they cannot always trust religious leaders and teachers. Abductions are happening in epidemic proportions. Preparing a youngster to stay safe seems almost impossible.

There are some methods of protection that are not the whole answer to the problem, but, provide some degree of safety. Children can be taught not to go close to a stranger in a car. They can be warned what to do if a stranger asks them to help look for a lost puppy.

There can be a rule in place which prevents them from accepting a ride home from anyone, friend or not. Schools do not let a child leave unless the designated parent or baby sitter takes him or her. However, there are always instances when these safety methods do not work out as planned.

One concerned group of citizens conducted an experiment. They approached young children in a parking lot near a school. They asked if anyone would like to see their litter of puppies. They then were able to entice half of the children they approached to climb into a van to see the puppies up close.

When little children are told they will be stolen and never see their parents again, they do not fully grasp what the consequences actually are. People die on television and in movies and often return, still alive. Children do not always grasp the concept that death is forever.

Teen-age kids can be taught to rely on their own instincts. When they feel apprehensive about a situation, they should be told to get away from there as fast as possible. Unfortunately, the predator may not allow them to escape.

Parents are told to have a picture and lock of hair ready, along with fingerprints, if their child goes missing. These things will help the police to move fast to find the child. It is important to remember the color of the clothing he or she wore to school that day. It is a sad commentary on our society that families must live in fear of being abducted while the predators enjoy freedom without worry.
