The marriage records Illinois issues to its residents are usually in the form of a certificate or a license. Such document is considered as a public document thus the residents have easy access on it.

Residents of Illinois frequently request for a copy of a marriage certificate. This is because, such document is one of the most useful public documents that the state has. The information that can be found on a marriage certificate is important in doing a genealogy research. Updating the part where one would know who married who is important in the family tree. There are government transactions which cannot be processed without presenting such document. This includes insurance and the declaration of all properties and assets that an individual owns. Only the bride and the groom as well as their immediate family are allowed to access such documents.

The Department of Health in Illinois does not provide certified copies of a marriage license. The office only helps by verifying and providing you details about where the marriage took place. One has to request for certified copies at the county where the marriage was registered. Retrieval cost would differ per county.
