The Fundamental Features Of LASIK Eye Surgery

By Frank Kaufmann

LASIK eye surgery, also known as laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a laser eye surgery that is commonly performed on individuals who have astigmatism, farsightedness and nearsightedness. This is considered a form of refractive surgery, as it reshapes the cornea of the eye to allow light that enters the eye to be focus on the retina. There is a lot of information that patients who are looking to have LASIK should know about the procedure.

The ultimate goal with this practice is to improve vision and therefore eliminate the usage of contact lenses or eyeglasses. There are an assortment of corrective treatments that are used to fix vision, including phakic IOL and PRK procedures. Professional eye doctors will be able to choose the treatment that will work a specific patient.

Costs of LASIK will be different from place to place. Usually the price is based on the region where the work is done and the doctor who does it. Sometimes the cost will be advertised based on the price of one eye and other times it is marketed as a package. People can expect to pay approximately one to three thousand dollars in total. Many care providers have payment plans so that patients can afford to pay for the treatment.

Basically, the process involve using special tools to make a thin flap in the cornea of the eye. This circular flap is pulled back, giving the doctor access to the cornea, or stroma, that lies underneath. A special laser that uses ultraviolet light beams, and is called an excimer, is used to remove small fragments of tissue from cornea, which helps shape it and refocus light.

The procedure is usually pain free and results can show within a day. The process involves use of only topical anesthetic drops. There are no stitches or bandages required. Most of the procedures will take less than an hour to complete. The cornea is expected to heal naturally after the procedure.

Before surgery, a doctor will do an eye exam to make sure the eyes are healthy enough to have this work done. Some characteristics that are checked during the exam: moistness of eye, size of pupil, cornea shape, refractive errors, cornea thickness. An assessment of medical and health history will also be taken into consideration.

Once the surgery is finished, the patient will have the opportunity to rest and usually they are permitted to go home. Temporary burning or itching is expected in the area. Blurry vision and haziness are also common for a short time after the procedure. The clarity should be restored by the following morning. The risks of LASIK must be considered. Some complications that are frequently reported: light sensitivity, floaters, dry eyes, double vision, and under or over corrective vision.

LASIK eye surgery is a type of medical procedure that is done in order to correct astigmatism, nearsightedness or far sightedness. This is done so that a patient no longer has to wear glasses or contact lenses in order to see. The success rate, costs and risks of this kind of procedure should be researched by potential patients.
